Having seen the first Santa Clause many times, I was surprised that I didn’t even know there was a second film (and a third which I will review tomorrow). However, shortly after putting it on I found out why I hadn’t heard of this film, as it has none of the charm or magic of the first film and is instead just TV movie quality emotionalist drivel.
The positives of The Santa Clause 2 are as follows: Judge Reinhold still has hideous jumpers, Tim Allen does a Buzz Lightyear impression as he plays a robot clone of himself. That’s it. Those are the only two moments in this entirely pointless sequel that got any sort of reaction from me that was above a yawn. Everything about this film from the opening to the end is just a complete waste of time and effort.
When a sequel to a film takes more than two or three years to happen it’s always a concern, as more often than not it usually means the studio are just looking for an easy way to make money. This is clearly the case with The Santa Clause 2 which uses a forced plot to try and continue a franchise that didn’t need continuing. \
Before watching this film I was quite happy knowing that Tim Allen was Santa and that all was fine with the world, so his re-appearance was just not needed at all. Particularly when it is so lazily written and shoddily performed by everyone. In my review of The Santa Clause I praised Tim Allen for his performance, however, after watching this film I almost want to take that praise back.
It is rare that I hate a film from start to finish but The Santa Clause 2 is a film that I did. I wish it had never been made and I really really wanted it to stop every second of its runtime. During this film-a-day challenge, I’ve seen some bad films but this has to be up there with the very worst.
