Top Tracks of 2017

So 2017 has been a year that featured an absolute embarrassment of pop culture miscellany, from film to TV, to books and video games. Music has been especially great this year, thankfully making 2017 somewhat bearable. Here are our Top Tracks of 2017. (Please note that these songs are in no particular order.)


The Louvre LORDE

In 2014 Lorde appeared out of nowhere and brought with her genius lopsided-pop singles like ‘Royals’ and promptly took over. This year was her comeback, and what a comeback! From the Robyn-indebted ‘Green Light’ through the more straight-forward balladry of Liability, Melodrama is an album wrapped up in teenage heartbreak. The high point is ‘The Louvre’, with all its naïve invincibility of doomed love. The sentiment of “But we’re the greatest, they’ll hang us in the Louvre” perfectly juxtaposed with the insecurity of “I overthink your punctuation use”. With a chorus all too aware that she’s making everyone dance to her adolescent romantic missteps. (AR)


Andrew Eldritch is Moving Back to Leeds THE MOUNTAIN GOATS

A metaphorical journey about Sisters of Mercy singer Andrew Eldritch returning to his hometown after years on tour and finding it hasn’t changed much at all. It is a slow, melancholic and beautiful song with it’s repetitive, throbbing bass line giving it a real mood of nostalgia and deep rooted sadness. (JW)


Try Not to Freak Out

For a pure pop rock hit, you couldn’t do much worse in 2017 than to give a listen to Sløtface’s Try Not To Freak Out. Filled to the brim with songs about boring parties (‘Pitted’), Tinder-stalking (‘Nancy Drew’) and image-policing (‘Magazine’), it explores all the touchstones of late-2010s living. ‘Try’ is its key moment, a mental breakdown in power pop form. With the still-present stigma that surrounds talking about mental health, the chorus really hits home “I promise not to freak out this week, I just go crazy when I’m gone”. (AR)



Calling back to the days of 90’s female-fronted punk pop, Charly Bliss are a delicious smoothie of the Breeders and the Cranberries. New song ‘Glitter’ has one of the catchiest choruses I’ve heard in a long time, but everything they’ve made (they’re new on the scene) has an infectious, funky sound. I’ll be following their careers closely and so should you. (JC)


Tummy Ache DIET CIG
Swear I’m Good at This

New York-based two piece Diet Cig have been quietly wowing people since their debut EP in 2015. Taking their minimalist approach to music and ethos from punk but with a certain twee-ness to their songs, the band have gained comparisons to The Front Bottoms and Hop Along. ‘Tummy Ache’ addresses that “un-punk rock softness” head on; the coda of “It’s hard to be a punk while wearing a skirt” hammers home the directed frustration at not being taken seriously. High Ticket Attraction THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS
Whiteout Conditions

One of the most consistent bands of recent memory, The New Pornographers this year released their new album Whiteout Conditions. ‘High Ticket Attractions’ was introduced to us about two weeks after this similarly impressive, ‘This is The World of the Theater’. In a way it was a toss up for which would be included in this list. But ‘High…’ wins out. It’s a little faster, a little heavier and will make you want to dance like crazy. (JC)


Black Rain CREEPER
Eternity, In Your Arms

‘Black Rain”s pre-chorus “We’re so forgettable and miserable” seems like something written by a critic who didn’t quite ‘get’ Creeper’s appeal. While no doubt seen as some no-hoping MCR-clones by lazy journos, Southampton horror punks Creeper have proven themselves over the past few years to be so much more. Debut album Eternity, In Your Arms is a thrilling collision of Born To Run-Springsteen with Nick Cave’s gothic sleaze and early AFI’s hardcore gallop. Note that mid-middle eight bass slide – a thing of supreme beauty. (AR)


Pretty Little Distance AS IT IS

Coming off of AS IT IS’s latest album okay., ‘Pretty Little Distance’ is one of my easy favourites and one that stuck in my head for days, somehow both slightly cynical and endlessly optimistic. Patty Walters’ powerful vocals are complimented by some great hooks and pumped full of the best kind of pop punk energy and enthusiasm, making this track basically catchy as fuck. (RT)


Mississippi JAMIE LENMAN

Remember Reuben? Of course you don’t. Quite simply, they were the best band Britain produced in the last twenty years and they broke up in 2008. Reuben mastermind Jamie Lenman hasn’t been completely silent since then, having released his debut solo (double) album in 2013. This hulking muthafucker is from album two, Devolver – the sound of Queens Of The Stone Age dry-humping Nine Inch Nails with added Delta-Blues flavour. “M-I/Double S-I/Double S-I/P-P-I” – who knew spelling could sound so vital? Charli XCX is hurriedly becoming one of the most interesting voices in pop music since her synth-pop 2012 debut, True Romance. Ever since she has reinvented herself at every conceivable opportunity. Most know her from her shouty guess spot on Icona Pop’s pure-pop masterpiece ‘I Love It’, but her 2014 album hued closer to pop punk than her electro beginnings before returning to synth pop in its most elemental form here. Produced by PC Music producer Sophie, ‘Boys’ is pop at its most pure. A sparse yet punchy ode to that most simple of pursuits: daydreaming about the titular males. (AR)
